Led by Alex Edkins of METZ, Weird Nightmare returns with Hoopla, a bright, melodic set that leans fully into classic guitar pop. Co-produced with Jim Eno of Spoon and recorded at Seth Manchester’s Machines with Magnets, the album sharpens Edkins’ knack for concise songwriting and instant hooks. Where the self-titled debut favoured home-recorded charm, Hoopla widens the palette. Piano, bells and subtle percussive touches add gloss without sanding down the songs’ directness, while a lean, unfussy sound keeps everything punchy and immediate. Backed by Loel Campbell on drums and Roddy Kuester on bass, Edkins lands a run of tight, addictive tracks that feel built for repeat plays. Rooted in the spirit of The Replacements and Elvis Costello & the Attractions, and sitting comfortably alongside Sharp Pins, Ratboys and Alvvays, Hoopla is buoyant, confident power pop. At its core is a simple message: warmth, optimism and a genuine love of the form, delivered with a grin.
