Alev Lenz builds 4 in a Cycle of Thirds from a simple but rigorous idea: one drone for each note of the chromatic scale. From these foundations, she shapes a set of songs that draw on folk traditions, chamber arrangements and contemporary composition, with occasional darker tonal shifts. Written alongside early drone sketches by Jas Shaw, the album carries a sense of cohesion and restraint, with each piece rooted in tone and texture rather than conventional structure. Lenz’s voice moves through these settings with a measured, intimate presence, guiding the material as it shifts between sparse arrangements and more layered passages. The result is a carefully constructed song cycle where minimal elements open out into something expansive and quietly absorbing.
