Swim Deep’s fifth studio album Hum finds the Birmingham quintet regrouping and pushing forward with sharpened intent. Written amid personal change and a shift in the band’s line-up, the record captures a group recommitting to each other and to the idea of sustaining a grassroots indie band against the odds. Lead single Pieces Of You sets the tone: defiant alternative rock built on chiming melodies, thick distortion and a renewed sense of bite. It reflects the album’s broader sound — heavier, more assured and emotionally direct — while still rooted in the melodic instincts that have long defined the band. The songs on Hum continue the emotional arc begun on There’s A Big Star Outside, moving from moments of transformation into their aftermath. Themes of loss, family and responsibility run throughout, shaped by frontman Austin “Ozzy” Williams’ changing personal world and a clearer sense of who and what the music is now for. Hum is an album about persistence: turning pressure into momentum and uncertainty into purpose. It’s the sound of Swim Deep still chasing the dream, but with deeper stakes and a stronger sense of why it matters.
