Manchester Orchestra’s 2006 full-length debut I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child already contained the hallmarks that would define the Atlanta band. Southern gospel organ meets downtuned ’90s fuzz, while near-whispers swell into towering walls of sound. Andy Hull’s songwriting tackles spirituality, romance, identity and mortality with striking openness, moving between the atmospheric weight of Where Have You Been? and the fragile Sleeper 1972. Word of mouth took the album beyond its underground beginnings, setting Manchester Orchestra on the path to international recognition.
