Now an absolute stone-cold classic, Donuts was initially an album written out of necessity as James Yancey was hospitalised at the time with the disease that would eventually prematurely end his life, and without his usual studio tools, he was forced into making beat tape-like collages. The album was released three days before his death, and its magpie-like scattershot approach to beatmaking and sampling has since been used by...well... pretty much everyone since.
