Brown Spirits are a psychedelic three-piece from Melbourne whose music fuses krautrock repetition, free-jazz intensity and heavy 1970s funk into a raw, propulsive sound. Recorded and mixed at home to ¼-inch analogue tape, their recordings capture the band’s DIY approach and unfiltered energy. Brown Spirits #1, released by Soul Jazz Records, returns one of the group’s earliest recordings to circulation. Originally issued in a very small run and long unavailable, it documents the trio’s hypnotic groove-driven approach, where motorik rhythms, blown-out guitars and exploratory improvisation collide.
