A Better Land sees Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express move away from the jazz-rock edge of their debut into a warmer, more melodic sound. Guided largely by guitarist Jim Mullen’s songwriting, the album leans into spacious arrangements, acoustic textures and three-part harmonies, balancing country-tinged influences with Auger’s signature keys. Tracks like A Better Land and Dawn of Another Day unfold with an easy, reflective pace, while Fill Your Head With Laughter taps back into the band’s Hammond-driven energy. Throughout, Auger’s organ and electric piano sit alongside Mullen’s guitar, with Barry Dean and Robbie McIntosh providing a relaxed but precise rhythm section. Lyrically, the record centres on simple pleasures and cautious optimism, giving it a grounded, thoughtful tone. Co-writes from Alan Gorrie add further depth, and the strength of the material was later recognised by Sarah Vaughan, who recorded several of its songs.
