Recorded on 16 July 1982 at the inaugural WOMAD Festival in Somerset, Live at WOMAD 1982 captures Peter Gabriel in the midst of a defining moment. Conceived as a festival devoted to music and art beyond the mainstream, WOMAD set out to prove that artists from across the world could stand as headliners in their own right. Gabriel’s Friday-night set embodied that ambition. The performance features a special run of non-album material: seven of the eight songs that would soon form Peter Gabriel 4 (Security), unveiled live two months before the album’s release. Looking back, Gabriel recalls an unusually charged atmosphere: the pressure of launching WOMAD, the uncertainty of the audience size, and the thrill of premiering unfamiliar material combined to create what he describes as an “edgy” and memorable show. Songs such as The Rhythm of the Heat, San Jacinto, and Shock the Monkey appear here in their earliest live form. More than a live recording, Live at WOMAD 1982 documents the birth of a global festival and a pivotal chapter in Gabriel’s catalogue.
