Following the dissolution of black midi, bassist and occasional frontman Cameron Picton stepped away from the idea of leading another band or launching a straightforward solo project. Instead, he formed My New Band Believe — a name that reads as both a gesture of openness and a quiet challenge to step into unfamiliar territory. Their self-titled debut album finds Picton building a loose collective around him, featuring seven members of caroline alongside Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams and Steve Noble. Together they create a record that moves through sharp emotional turns and tangled narrative threads, guided by Picton’s slippery but magnetic voice. Despite being almost entirely acoustic, with minimal reverb or electronic treatment, the album feels anything but restrained. Songs assemble, fracture and reform; moments of uplift collide with sudden swerves in mood and tempo. Drawing on the driving guitar work of Bert Jansch and the widescreen pop vision of Judee Sill, the result is expansive yet unsettled — a constantly shifting world that rewards close listening and a willingness to follow its strange internal logic. Bonus 10" features the tracks Numerology (One Night) and Numerology (One Night) (Instrumental).
