John Hassall and The April Rainers follow 2017’s Wheels to Idyll with a self-titled album of melodic psych-pop and reflective songwriting recorded largely at Hassall’s home studio in Aarhus, Denmark. Produced by the band, the album expands on the warm, classic songwriting of its predecessor with richer arrangements and a stronger studio focus, helped along by the contributions of string player Clementine Brown. Written with longtime collaborator Steev Burgess, the songs drift through memories, travel, fading ambitions and everyday romance. Lead single Miracles, inspired by Hassall’s relationship with his wife Line, finds poetry in ordinary life, while Doing Time includes a co-writing credit from fellow Libertine Peter Doherty. Best known as bassist in The Libertines, Hassall brings the same understated melodic touch that has run through his work with both The Libertines and Yeti, joined here by Danish backing band The April Rainers.
