Charlotte Cornfield’s sixth album Hurts Like Hell marks a clear shift in perspective, shaped by personal change and a widening sense of what her music can hold. Rooted in themes of renewal, resilience, and love tested by difficulty, the record feels both deeply intimate and quietly expansive. Recorded at Philip Weinrobe’s Sugar Mountain studio in Brooklyn, Cornfield worked with a full band including El Kempner, Bridget Kearney, Adam Brisbin, and Sean Mullins, with additional contributions from Núria Graham and Daniel Pencer. Vocal harmonies from Feist, Buck Meek, Christian Lee Hutson, and Maia Friedman play a central role, giving the songs a communal warmth and emotional depth. The album’s title track sets the tone: a country-leaning, slow-burning song built on trust, restraint, and collective feel. Elsewhere, harmony becomes a storytelling tool, with voices weaving in and out to bring characters and moments into focus. Balancing past scars with forward momentum, Hurts Like Hell captures Cornfield at her most open and assured, holding vulnerability and strength in equal measure.
