Released in 2011, Happy Soup is Baxter Dury’s third album, bringing his droll spoken-word observations and deadpan delivery to a strain of indie-pop he dubbed “seaside psychedelia”. Playful and melancholic in equal measure, its sparse arrangements are softened by sweet backing vocals from Madelaine Hart, while Dury sketches a distinctly British world of bar-room characters, awkward encounters and bruised romance.
