Tulpa arrive fully formed with their debut album on Skep Wax Records. Despite having released nothing before now, the Leeds quartet were invited by Marc Riley and Gideon Coe to record a BBC 6 Music session, while their songs have already found eager audiences on the UK’s DIY festival and indie venue circuit. They’ve recently shared stages with Throwing Muses, Pale Blue Eyes and Bug Club, and headline shows follow in October and November 2025. A tulpa is a mythical being manifested through concentrated thought - a fitting metaphor for these tightly-wound pop songs. Josie Kirk’s crystalline voice anchors the record, melodic yet disarmingly human, while twin guitars weave between catchy hooks and sudden surges of intensity. Beneath the surface, darker edges emerge in both words and sound. Highlights include the Breeders-esque rush of first single Let’s Make A Tulpa!, the hypnotic, Yo La Tengo–tinged Psyops, the gentle confessional Amateur Hour, and the jagged energy of Raw Nerve. Recorded in the Scottish Highlands with Jamie Lockhart (The Cribs, Mush, Drahla), this debut is a striking introduction to a band already creating their own myth.
