Tommy Guerrero’s 2014 album No Man’s Land captures his effortless mix of soul, funk and downtempo styles. Like his artwork, the music feels unassuming yet deeply affecting — loose jams that ripple with warmth and rhythm, as if played from a front stoop but reaching far wider. His melodies circle the head while grooves pull straight to the hips, drawing lines from Santana and Bill Withers through to The Clash and Public Enemy. By the time of this release, Guerrero’s career already spanned decades of skateboarding, design and music: from riding with the Bones Brigade and co-founding Real Skateboards, to directing art for Krooked Skateboarding and running the 40s Clothing label. Alongside that came a steady run of records across Mo’Wax, Galaxia, Quannum and beyond, cementing his reputation as a singular figure whose creativity flows as naturally as his grooves.
