James Taylor celebrates 40 years as a solo artist with The Truth, the third release in the Jazz Sessions series and his first album recorded in a trio format. After launching his solo career with the James Taylor Quartet's 1986 version of Herbie Hancock's Blow Up for Acid Jazz precursor Re-Elect The President, Taylor returns to the label where his career began.
Joined by Theo Carasco (drums) and Orlando Flemming (upright bass), Taylor draws on the soulful jazz of Les McCann, Hampton Hawes and Lonnie Liston Smith, with Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ and Solina string synth at the heart of the sound. Guests Aref Durvesh (tabla) and gospel-trained vocalist Liz Jai appear across the album, which includes versions of Vince Guaraldi's Lucy & Linus and Thus Sprach Zarathustra, alongside new originals.
