Tenderlonious presents Africa/Brass Live, a reinterpretation of John Coltrane’s landmark work, recorded at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival as part of Pique-nique’s Take Two series. The format pairs a full playback of a classic album with a live response, inviting musicians to absorb and reshape the source material in real time. Joined by Tim Carnegie, Horatio Luna and On-Ly, Tenderlonious builds from Coltrane’s themes before opening into instinctive, searching improvisation. Melody acts as the anchor, but the performance quickly stretches outward, driven by intensity and interplay. Rather than replicate the original, the group uses it as a springboard, tracing its own path through the music’s spirit and structure, with a focus on feel, space and expression.
