Shearwater continue their steady evolution on The New World, a richly layered album led by songwriter and natural historian Jonathan Meiburg. Across nine songs, the band move through moments of wonder, uncertainty and resilience, balancing intricate arrangements with a strong emotional pull.
Alongside core members Emily Lee and Dan Duszynski, Meiburg is joined by a wide-ranging cast including Shahzad Ismaily, Doug Wieselman, Farouz Zriek, Leo Abrahams, Mamadou Kouyate, Mahamadou Tounkara, Moctar Kouyate and Thor Harris, plus a guest appearance from Laurie Anderson. The result is expansive but focused, with each contribution adding texture without overwhelming the songs themselves.
