Sarathy Korwar, the boundary-pushing drummer, producer and composer, presents his seventh album There Is Beauty, There Already on Otherland. Following his acclaimed 2022 release KALAK, this record marks a shift inward - a 40-minute suite of hypnotic, percussion-led improvisations that foreground the melodic potential of rhythm. Drawing on the circular structures of Indian folk music, the layered textures of jazz ensembles like Max Roach’s M’Boom, and the minimalism of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, Korwar crafts an ever-shifting flow of sound. From the resonant bass of tabla to the tonal variety of the ghatam, sharp snare cracks, and shimmering washes of Buchla Easel synth, the album moves with the ceaseless energy of a river. It’s a celebration of drums as lead voice - raw, expressive, and unfiltered. “It’s me falling back in love with percussion,” says Korwar. “Unlike previous albums that dealt with migration or identity, this one is simply about letting the drums speak.”
