Sixty years after first emerging with Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson remains one of rock's greatest songwriters. Hippies, Thugs and Heroes draws on old friends, false gurus, imagined characters and fragments of his own past to create an unpredictable collection. From the Byrds-inspired The Sorcerer's Apprentice to the swagger of Everybody's Stealing, the album moves effortlessly between styles, with Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking showcasing Thompson's extraordinary guitar playing. Recorded live with his longtime band in just a few takes, these songs explore faith, power and self-belief while proving Richard Thompson is still as inventive as ever.
