Pepe Deluxé mark a quarter-century of their sample-saturated debut Super Sound. Originally emerging at the turn of the millennium, the album established the group as maximalist pop alchemists - stitching together hip-hop breakbeats, lounge exotica, cartoonish psych, vintage advertising jingles and B-movie sonics into a surreal yet sharply defined whole. This remastered edition reminds listeners how radical it sounded in its moment. Super Sound arrived before the streaming overload that would later flatten genre boundaries; instead, it embraced the jump-cut logic of mixtape culture, zine humour and crate-digging rarities to make something joyous, cheeky and disarming. A quarter-century on, you can still hear the flick-knife edits, needle-drop gags and sugar-rush hooks that formed its signature. It documents an era when dancefloor culture, advertising iconography and post-rave surrealism overlapped - and shows how the group’s early instinct for pop collage was already fully formed. Super Sound remains a riotous first statement: unruly, loud and irrepressibly fun.
