Moses Boyd explores the push and pull of belief on Songs for Sinners, his second solo album. Rather than offering answers, Boyd treats faith as something personal and unsettled, capable of comforting, dividing and restoring. Gospel runs through the record alongside jazz, soundsystem culture, 808s, choir harmonies and Caribbean rhythms, moving between bruised chords, heavy bass, organ swells, handclaps and communal vocals. Six years after his previous solo album, Songs for Sinners finds the drummer, composer and producer pushing his music well beyond conventional jazz boundaries.
