Kenny Dixon Jr.'s Black Mahogani II originally appeared in limited numbers alongside his acclaimed Black Mahogani and has never been repressed - until now. A notable shift from his usual house-driven sound, the record dives deep into live jazz territory, built from after-hours sessions with his Detroit band. The centrepiece is the 18-minute When She Follows - a slow-burning, exploratory suite of rolling drum fills, Fender Rhodes, wandering acoustic bass, and ghostly sax, with an amorphous vocal line that drifts like a techno epic reimagined by Gil Scott-Heron’s backing band. Rectify continues in this rich vein, weaving jazz textures into a Detroit techno framework. The closing tracks - Dirty Little Bonus Beats and When She (Reprise) - deconstruct and reshape the main cut: the former adds rhythmic drums, sighing vocals and altered basslines, while the latter injects a squelchy, tempo-shifting synth for a more abstract finale. A rare and remarkable detour in Dixon’s discography.
