Karl Hector expands on a lone 1996 7" with Sahara Swing, a collaborative album shaped alongside Jay Whitefield and members of The Malcouns and Poets of Rhythm, released via Now-Again Records. Recorded in Germany, the record pulls together a wide cast of Munich-based players to map the musical routes Hector has followed over the years. Across nearly twenty tracks, the focus stays locked on rhythm, drawing from the pulse of James Brown and Fela Kuti, while folding in touches inspired by Mulatu Astatke, Jean-Claude Vannier and Can. Afro-leaning funk meets psychedelic exploration, with each piece circling back to a shared emphasis on groove and movement. Rather than settling into any one tradition, Sahara Swing connects styles and influences into a unified, rhythm-driven whole.
