Joe Hisaishi presents a powerful live recording featuring two large-scale works: his own composition The End of the World and Steve Reich’s seminal The Desert Music. Captured at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall with the Future Orchestra Classics and the Philharmonic Chorus of Tokyo, this performance forms part of Hisaishi’s long-running concert series exploring modern orchestral repertoire from a conductor’s perspective. Since launching the Future Orchestra Classics project in 2019 with new interpretations of Beethoven’s Fifth and Seventh symphonies, Hisaishi has used the series to spotlight both his own works and those of composers he admires. Now on its seventh volume, the series reaches an ambitious peak with this recording of Reich’s rhythmic masterpiece and Hisaishi’s expansive original score.
