Produced by Creed Taylor and arranged by Oliver Nelson, the album places their distinctive voices within a powerful brass- and reed-driven big band. Recorded over three days at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio, the sessions feature drummer Grady Tate and bassist Richard Davis anchoring a taut rhythm section. Montgomery’s fluid, melodic phrasing intertwines with Smith’s fiery organ lines across a mix of originals and inventive covers, including Smith’s James and Wes and a darkly reworked take on Baby, It’s Cold Outside.
