Ibibio Sound Machine’s Chopping Mountain distils the London collective’s blend of afrobeat, disco, funk and post-punk into a vibrant set centred on connection, resistance and hope. Produced by Max Grunhard, the album grew from live jams, with many tracks taking shape through rhythm, improvisation and instinct. Eno Williams’ commanding vocals move between English and Ibibio, bringing urgency to songs such as Return to Sender, while Give Me Peace, featuring Dele Sosimi, rides a dub-influenced groove built around a simple but powerful refrain. From the Afro-disco of Concept of Love to the highlife influences of Love, the band’s rich interplay of horns, guitars and electronics keeps the energy high throughout. Chopping Mountain is a celebration of community, perseverance and the power of music to bring people together.
