In June 1964, Grant Green recorded Solid, a fiercely charged post-bop session that remained unreleased until 1979, when Blue Note shifted attention back from his soul jazz successes. Here the guitarist leads a powerhouse sextet, stretching out with Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, James Spaulding on alto, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The result captures Green at his most adventurous, balancing hard-swinging energy with searching improvisation.
