When a Studer A80 tape machine arrived at his doorstep and couldn’t fit through the door, Floating Points (aka Sam Shepherd) took it as the spark to begin building the studio that would shape his debut album Elaenia. Moving beyond laptop-based production, Shepherd spent five years constructing the record while DJing around the world and completing a PhD in neuroscience. The result is an ambitious and deeply personal work, drawing on classical, jazz, electronic, soul and Brazilian popular music. Named after a bird, Elaenia captures the expansive, boundary-pushing vision that positioned Floating Points as one of the most adventurous voices in contemporary music. 10th anniversary edition features a bonus track and booklet.
