Ewan Bleach draws on pre-war jazz and dance music for Mystic Mood, bringing the easy charm of his Cable Street Rag Band and Fleeting Paradise Orchestra to a set that feels lively rather than nostalgic. Clarinet, horns and restless rhythms move between sweetness, melancholy and joyful abandon, with the musicians playing off one another instinctively. September Rag, Sipihr Song and Rolling Home highlight Bleach’s gift for old-school melody and off-kilter romance. Jonny Greenwood is among his admirers, praising music that captures the spirit of the past without simply copying it.
