Taking its title from Kenneth Anger’s infamous film, Death In Vegas’ third album Scorpio Rising is a widescreen collision of experimental beats, psychedelic textures and classic guitar rock. The record features guest appearances from Liam Gallagher, Hope Sandoval and Paul Weller, alongside striking string arrangements by Indian violinist and composer Dr. Subramaniam Lakshminarayana. Several songs found their way into film, television and advertising, with Girls memorably used in Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation. The album’s centrepiece is the title track, sung by Gallagher, which cheekily reworked Status Quo’s 1967 hit Pictures of Matchstick Men with the full blessing of Francis Rossi. A bold and eclectic statement, Scorpio Rising captures Death In Vegas at their most ambitious and collaborative.
