Before becoming black metal figureheads, Darkthrone made their debut with 1991’s Soulside Journey. Recorded at Sweden’s Sunlight Studios with Tomas Skogsberg, it finds the band playing intricate, melodic death metal with doom-laden passages and an unmistakably sinister edge. Influenced by the likes of Autopsy but already developing their own identity, it remains a fascinating outlier in the Darkthrone catalogue.
