Cactus Lee has spent years shaping a quietly distinctive songbook, playing Austin honky-tonks while releasing records at his own steady pace. Lee’s Dream, his second album for Western Vinyl, distils that path into a set of songs written on the road and refined at home, tracing the pull between a life in music and a life anchored by family. Conceived during a month-long solo tour through the Midwest and South, the material began as sketches written in vans and motel rooms, sparked in part by a visit to Guy Clark’s reconstructed basement at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Returning to personal upheaval, Kevin Dehan wrote inward-facing songs that balance movement with commitment, and longing with a sense of duty. Recorded at Fort Horton Studios with producer Billy Horton, Lee’s Dream leans into classic country forms and Sun-era tones, guided by touchstones like John D. Loudermilk, Glen Campbell, and early Gordon Lightfoot. Finished with contributions from a close circle of collaborators, the record feels communal and lived-in—rooted in Texas imagery and country folklore while subtly bending tradition to Dehan’s unmistakable voice.
