The Ruts emerged in late-1970s London with a fierce collision of punk and reggae, rooted in a clear anti-racist stance and a reputation for intense live energy. Their run of classics included Babylon’s Burning, Staring At The Rude Boys and Something That I Said, all delivered with a focused urgency that set them apart. The band’s momentum was cut short by the death of charismatic frontman Malcolm Owen in the summer of 1980, aged just 23. Soon after, they issued what many consider their masterpiece – West One (Shine On Me) – which lends its name to this set. Shine On Me provides a chronological dive through every single The Ruts released featuring Owen – from the self-produced debut In A Rut in 1979 to the posthumous West One. This collection marks the first time these singles have been gathered together on vinyl in one place. It also includes the B-sides from the original releases – blistering cuts that stand shoulder to shoulder with the A-sides, rather than functioning as mere extras.
