First released in 1992, FM collects Freddie McGregor recordings made between 1977 and 1982 for Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith’s High Times label. Backed by the Soul Syndicate, McGregor moves through funky, soulful roots reggae, led by the enduring Natural Collie, his take on Norman Connors’ You Are My Starship. Also included are Mission Impossible, Strange Things, Revolutionist, Leave Yah and Mark of the Beast, alongside interpretations of American R&B and Jamaican favourites. A fine showcase for McGregor’s expressive voice and the Soul Syndicate’s heavyweight playing.
