Derrick Morgan, the undisputed King of Ska, proved his talents extended far beyond the genre’s 1960s heyday. As ska evolved into rocksteady and then reggae, Morgan’s distinctive voice adapted effortlessly, forging a lasting creative partnership with producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee. The pair first struck gold with ‘Hold Your Jack’, a Jamaican hit whose rhythm later underpinned Max Romeo’s UK smash ‘Wet Dream’. By the early 1970s, Lee was at the peak of his powers, winning Jamaican Producer of the Year for four consecutive years. In 1974 he brought Morgan into the studio to record In The Mood, a vibrant showcase of reggae rhythms and vocal authority. Originally also known as This Is Derrick Morgan, the album reintroduced the singer to reggae’s new audience while underlining his enduring versatility. This edition expands the original tracklist with standout duets  including ‘I’m Gone’ with Hortense Ellis and ‘Feel So Good’ and ‘So Long Baby’ with Paulette, alongside favourites like ‘The Conqueror’ and the rocksteady-flavoured ‘Greedy Gal’. It’s a testament to one of Jamaican music’s greats, proving his voice can shine over any rhythm.
