Autopsy’s Mental Funeral is widely regarded as one of death metal’s defining records. Originally released in 1991, the band's second album refined the raw brutality of Severed Survival, delivering a darker, doom-laden sound that would prove hugely influential. Formed in San Francisco in 1987 by former Death drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert, Autopsy quickly became one of the genre’s most distinctive acts. Recorded at Different Fur Studios in late 1990 and featuring artwork by Kev Walker, Mental Funeral captures the band at their most uncompromising, combining savage riffs, macabre atmosphere and a raw, organic production style. More than three decades later, it remains an essential extreme metal classic.
