Moodymann’s Black Mahogani is a defining deep house record - an emotionally charged blend of soul, jazz, and analog groove rooted in Detroit’s rich musical heritage. Originally released in 2004, it stands as one of his most revered works, completing the thread of ideas laid out on his rare KDJ 12”s from the late ’90s. With contributions from key Detroit figures including the late Amp Fiddler, Roberta Sweed, and Norma Jean Bell, Kenny Dixon Jr. infused his sample-based compositions with new warmth and live instrumentation. The result is a rich, cinematic sound that expands the deep house genre while drawing deeply from 1970s soul and soundtrack influences. Marked by subtle tension and release, Black Mahogani is both timeless and unmistakably of its place - a soulful, slow-burning masterpiece that remains a cornerstone of 21st-century Black American music. Available on smoke coloured vinyl 3LP.
